Felt number toys

After seeing this on Pinterest, I became all inspired to create my own. E is just starting to recognise numbers so I thought these might help her. She has been playing with them all morning. xD

I used:

First I drew the numbers onto scrap paper. If you want really even shapes you could print some off but my printer has no ink at the moment so I just drew them. My templates were approximately the size of one quarter of a sheet of A4 paper.

Then I drew round these onto the felt and cut out two copies for each number. I then sewed the two parts together using blanket stitch. If you're not sure how to do blanket stitch there's a great tutorial here.

I decided to stuff the numbers as I went because they are such awkward shapes. You can use whatever stuffing you want but I just recycled some from an old ripped cushion.

Keep sewing and stuffing all the way round until you reach where you started to stitch. Finish off the stitch and you should have a fab number cushion to play with or just to brighten up your room.

Now do the same with the other numbers!

Variations

  • add buttons to each number for counting practice (number 3 has 3 buttons etc)
  • make them larger if you want more of a cushion than a toy
  • use them for a mobile or as 'bunting'
  • give them eyes and mouths to make them even more appealing to children
  • make alphabet versions of these cushions
